Youth Involvement

Despite age restrictions on the construction site, there are many ways that youth can get involved with Habitat for Humanity. From working on non-construction tasks, to fundraising and preparing a meal, there are plenty of opportunities for youth to really feel like they are a part of Habitat for Humanity and that they are helping families and individuals in the community reach their dream of home ownership.

How can youth get involved in a build?

  • On the Construction Site! All on-site construction volunteers must be  at least 16 years old. Those ages 14-15 can help with limited activities such as clearing lots, landscaping, or painting, but they may not participate in general construction. Youth ages 13 and younger can help prepare snacks and lunch, take photographs, sign in volunteers, and help clean and organize.
  • In fundraising! We have a variety of ways groups can help us fundraise -- through hosting a small event, gathering pop cans, creating an online fundraising page, and more. Contact Maggie Pforts, Resource Development Director, for more information.
  • At the Dedication Ceremony! Your group can give the partner family a gift to welcome them into their new home. Local groups have donated quilts, blankets, toys, and kitchen items. Other options could include creating a mural, decorating tableware or place mats, planting a tree or small flower garden, painting a birdhouse, making stepping stones, or any other ideas that you may have!

How do I set up youth group involvement?

Think about these questions and email Ashley Wahlert, the volunteer coordinator, to discuss your involvement.

  1. How many students plan on getting involved?
  2. What type of involvement is feasible for your group? (think about resources that you currently have and what you will need)
  3. How old will the volunteers be? Will any adults come along with the group to volunteer?
  4. What kind of time commitment will work for your group?  Can you volunteer for a few days or can you only volunteer once for a few hours?
