East Side Recycling Center

The East Side Recycling Center, located at 2401 Scott Blvd. SE, was purchased by the City of Iowa City in 2006. Iowa Valley Habitat and the Habitat ReStore are both located at the East Side Recycling Center and work to further the intended purpose of the site: to provide a place for citizens to reuse and recycle materials.

Construction for East Side Recycling Center

An expansion project has begun on the East Side Recycling Center, and when completed, will be a one-stop recycling hub for all of Iowa City. As changes are made to the East Side Recycling Center, the Habitat ReStore will play a central role in City of Iowa City recycling events. The site currently hosts the Habitat ReStore and recycling bins that are available to the public, however plans call to eventually house The Furniture Project and the Salvage Barn. Each of these organizations has been asked to join the East Side Recycling Center to demonstrate to citizens how different pieces of our local building economy, human services and historic preservation relate to waste reduction, reuse, and recycling.

New Development Site Plan

The actual design and construction of the East Side Recycling Center will be an educational tool for the public. Stormwater runoff from this facility will be managed sustainably on site through the use of bioswales, and other projects, such as a green roof on the education building and permeable paving are still being considered. The environmental education center will likely host both an indoor and outdoor education room for groups to learn about waste reduction, recycling, stormwater management and other environmental projects throughout the City.

What's Happening Now

The first significant change to the site is the south entrance will close and a new north side entrance will be used for the duration of construction.  This means a smaller door and much less parking, but the overall ReStore experience won't change much at all.  Due to our limited space, all donations will be by appointment only and interested donors are encouraged to call and talk to our staff for assistance.  Pictures of the development and proposed site will be posted soon!
