Mobile Home Study
A Study of Older Manufactured Homes in Johnson County: Too Dangerous to Ignore
This past winter, Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity explored the poverty housing that is so prevalent in our community and completed a study of the various mobile home communities in the Johnson County area. The report, which provides a broad statistical description of mobile homes in Johnson County, documents the dangers and health hazards of older and substandard mobile homes.
This effort was prompted by the belief that mobile homes often serve as de facto poverty housing, yet they are often ignored and excluded from the larger community. Because Habitat’s mission has always been to provide simple, decent, affordable homes to families in need, our affiliate has felt compelled to explore this matter. Not only is the high number of unsafe mobile homes not given enough attention in our community, but there aren’t enough solutions presented to concerned community members who are interested in taking action to counter this issue.
