The Iowa City A.M. Rotary has joined Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity in a new program to benefit the entire community! Donations of Iowa's five cent returnable cans and plastic bottles will be collected at the 1st Avenue Hy-Vee in Iowa City on Saturday, January 5 and Sunday, January 6, 2013, and the first weekend of each month thereafter. There will be a "CAN DO" blue trailer parked in the parking lot where donations can be dropped off. Proceeds will support Community Grants for not-for-profits in Johnson County and the ongoing mission of Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity.
There are also three permanent donation sites for five cent cans and plastic bottles in Iowa City:
- City Carton at 3 E. Benton Street
- Eastside Recycling Center on Scott Boulevard
- The Can Shed at 611 Hollywood Boulevard
At the Can Shed, please indicate you want to donate the deposit money to Iowa City A.M. Rotary. City High School special education students will sort cans/bottles from the Eastside Recycling Center and mobile collection trailers, and share 1/4 of the money generated for their own use in job training and skill development.
In 2012, the Iowa City A.M. Rotary donated $10,000 through Community Grants to not-for-profit organizations in Johnson County using the proceeds from the generous can and plastic bottle donations from our community.
There will be a CAN DO trailer available to business, church, community and school groups for use at special events. The trailer will be dropped off and picked up making it easy and convenient to use. To reserve a CAN DO trailer for a special event and make sure cans/plastic bottles get recycled for a good cause, contact Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity at 319.337.8949 or email@example.com.
