Apply for A Brush With Kindness

A Brush with Kindness (ABWK) is a program that helps low-income homeowners by offering exterior home improvements. Volunteer teams work to improve the condition of homes by painting, landscaping, building wheelchair-accessible ramps and performing minor exterior repairs at no or minimal costs to homeowners who would be unable to complete home repairs on their own.

Able-bodied homeowners are encouraged to contribute to the project in some way, either by working alongside volunteers or by providing hospitality. This program is for homeowners earning 80 percent or less of the median income (see program requirements below), and who are over the age of 60. Homeowners with a disability may also apply.

Qualified project jobs

A Brush with Kindness focuses primarily on neighborhood beautification through the exterior painting and landscaping of homes. Landscaping work is free, but homeowners will be charged for painting and major repairs at the cost of materials. Any project charge will be paid back with a no-interest loan of $5-$30 a month, depending on income. Minor exterior repairs are offered at the discretion of A Brush with Kindness.

At this time A Brush with Kindness is unable to work on the interior of homes – all work must be done on the exterior. The program may provide limited services to two-story homes and manufactured homes. However, A Brush with Kindness may still be able to do landscaping around these homes.

  • Must be willing to partner with Habitat.
  • Must own and occupy a home within Johnson County that needs
    and could benefit from short-term exterior improvements.
  • Must meet the income guidelines outlined in the chart. Your family’s
    annual gross (before taxes) income must be below the maximum
    income shown.
  • Must be unable to afford necessary home improvements and unable
    to complete them otherwise due to age, disability, or circumstance.

In order to apply for A Brush with Kindness, you must fill out an application. If your application is approved, the ABWK work will be completed based on our volunteer availability.
