Apply for Many Hands

Many Hands serves the mission of Iowa Valley Habitat by seeking to provide affordable maintenance and renovation services to elderly, disabled, and lower-income individuals and families in order to renew the pride and dignity of owning and occupying a safe and decent home. The program has three components which are described in detail below:

Light Work

Ramp-Up

A Brush with Kindness

To be a qualified applicant for a Many Hands service, you must live in Johnson, Cedar, or Iowa County. If you live in another county, there may be another Habitat for Humanity affiliate closer to you. You must also be willing to partner with Habitat which may include asking able-bodied family members to work alongside the volunteers or providing volunteers with snacks and beverages.

Light Work

This program allows us to assist elderly and disabled homeowners and renters to maintain their home by helping with tasks such as changing their light bulbs, smoke alarm batteries, and furnace filters. This work is potentially dangerous to elderly and disabled individuals, and by performing it for them, Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity enables them to stay in their homes and maintain a safe living environment. These projects are funded by the Iowa City AM Rotary.

We DO offer:                                                We DO NOT offer:
• Light bulb replacement.                                • Window and gutter cleaning.
• Smoke detector battery replacement.            • Major landscaping.
• Furnace filter replacement.                           • Minor & major interior repairs.

“When can I receive this service?”
We will bring volunteer groups out once a month throughout the winter to provide this service to those who need it.
The up-coming "Light Work" dates are: Saturday, February 25th and Saturday, March 31st.

Ramp-Up

This program allows us to assist mobility-impaired homeowners on a limited budget by installing wheelchair accessible ramps as well as grab bars and handles so that they may enter, exit, and move about their homes more easily. Our goal is to provide a means for these individuals to retain their independence through the construction of affordable ramps and other useful tools.

We DO offer:                                                    We DO NOT offer:
• Porch & steps deconstruction.                          • Complex, customizable ramp construction.
• Simple ramp construction.                                • Major house repairs.
• Grab bar & handle installment.
• Doorway widening (for non-mobile homes only).

“When can I receive this service?”
Dates for ramp-up projects will be on a case-by-case basis throughout the entire year. The
entire process may take a few weeks or months, and the actual construction will likely occur
on a Friday/Saturday.
