The Alicia Scott family

Community is important to Alicia Scott, a resident of Williamsburg, Iowa. Her family, friends, and co-workers have been an unfailing source of support throughout her life. Alicia has been a resident of Williamsburg her entire life. Because of her strong support system, Alicia was able to carry through after her marriage of ten years ended in divorce.

“I decided that I wasn’t going to let it [the divorce] ruin my life,” Alicia said. “I wanted to show my girls that no matter what life throws at you, you can't let it stop you from following your dreams and turning your life around.”

Shortly after her divorce, Alicia started working as a special education teacher’s associate in the Williamsburg School District. She also made the commitment to earn her teaching degree by taking classes full time. Once again, the community of those around her was essential to help her overcome this challenging endeavor.

“Being a full-time student, a full-time employee, and a full-time single mom was very challenging, but I managed to make it work,” she said. “I wanted my girls to be able to look back at the obstacles I overcame in my life and hopefully see that they can overcome whatever comes their way with faith in themselves and support from their family.”

Alicia is a homeowner of a safe, decent, affordable home out of support from Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity. A mother of two daughters, Taylor and Logan, Alicia said she feels very blessed to have a home of her own.

“I know having a home will change many things for them [my girls] and give them the self confidence they need to feel like they are like other kids,” Alicia said. “This home means the world to us.”

Alicia's Habitat home was sponsored by the Whirlpool Building Blocks program. Construction began on Saturday, September 18, and was completed in time for her friends and family to come together in her new home to enjoy the holidays with one another.
